Dealio is a rather aggressive and very nasty piece of adware that infects your computer when you are least expecting it; unfortunately some people offering useful software decide that it will be better packaged with adware such as Dealio.

Ares Destiny is one such piece of useful software tainted by the color of this nasty disease.

And I didn’t realize until too late.

The first thing that you will likely notice about Ares Destiny is that the website is clean and professional looking; the next thing will be that it is entirely free of cost; the third that the download process works quickly and the fourth that the installation process is surprisingly painless. So far so good, you may be thinking.

And indeed that is what I thought. Even to the point where I was downloading and sharing music with others all over the world. I’d seen other versions of Ares around but Ares Destiny was the first one I’d notice that was free. I’d even started to recommend Ares Destiny to some of my friends.

Oh dear: what a mistake. It was only after a while that I noticed the popups ads appearing all over my computer. It was a little while after that that I tied these popups to Dealio which in turn I managed to tie to Ares Destiny. This is definitely no longer on my recommended software list.

Having just tried its hand at developing a digital music player, Microsoft is working on something new: digital furniture.

The company plans to unveil a touch screen computer today called Microsoft Surface, featuring a 30-inch screen embedded in an acrylic tabletop. The device’s electronic guts are hidden in the low-slung table’s thick pedestal.

At first glance, Surface is reminiscent of an old-fashioned arcade game table around which patrons played Pac-Man. But there is no joystick here, and no mouse or keyboard either. The device is controlled by touching the tabletop display.

Microsoft says this touch screen computer will allow people to “interact with digital content the same way they have interacted with everyday items such as photos, paintbrushes and music their entire life: with hands, with gestures and by putting real-world objects on the surface.”

For example, when a digital camera with Wi-Fi capabilities is placed on the display, the table recognizes the camera and, at a touch of the screen, downloads its photos and video clips. The digital pictures can be sorted and sized by “handling” them as if they were physical prints.

The device uses cameras under the display to detect touches, and unlike traditional touch screens it can handle multiple touches at the same time, said Jeff Gattis, the director of product management for Surface.

Similarly, Surface can read bar codes and identification tags embedded in objects like hotel chain membership cards.

Microsoft hopes this touch screen computer will someday be common in homes, but its first uses will be commercial. By the end of this year, Surface will appear in hotels, restaurants, retail stores and public entertainment sites, where it will serve as an information kiosk and handle things like basic customer service. Steven A. Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, was scheduled to unveil the product today at The Wall Street Journal’s “D: All Things Digital” conference in Carlsbad, Calif.

“With Surface, we are creating more intuitive ways for people to interact with technology,” Mr. Ballmer said in a statement. “We see this as a multibillion-dollar category, and we envision a time when touch screen computers will be pervasive, from tabletops and counters to the hallway mirror.”

Microsoft also named several partners that will be among the first companies to use Surface, including Harrah’s Entertainment, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide and T-Mobile USA. The device’s cost was not disclosed.

Phishing, online fraud, identity theft, viruses, hackers. It makes for really sad reading, doesn’t it? It makes me suspicious of everything online, and certainly I have a huge conceptual problem with downloading anything, even when I’m assured that it is safe.

I’m going to try to explain my latest Salvia trip to you. This trip was memorable for a number of reasons, but not least because of the huge fairy that appeared in the room almost as soon as I started smoking the Sally D. For obvious reasons I will call the Fairy Sally (though I’m not even sure that it was female).

The most important thing to remember about a Salvia hallucination is that it is not something you just see or hear. All your senses are involved in the hallucination and you truly believe that it is happening to you. At least that’s the way I feel. Others may view it differently.

The Salvia induced fairy almost filled the room in size and presence. “I am Ozymandeus”, she pronounced, “King of Kings. Look on my works, ye mighty, and tremble”. This quotation was from a poem I had been reading recently so I wasn’t as surprised as I could have been when she emitted the words. Still, quite an odd thing for a fairy to say.

Of course it was odd that there was a huge, talking fairy in my room as it was, but I don’t let these things bother me when I’m in the midst of a Salvia trip. Normally I’m not looking for logical explanations for what I’m seeing!

Sex is the bane of so many people’s lives that it is almost conceivable to imagine it being used to solve any problems or even enrich someone’s life. But indeed it has been used for just that. Sex is the main subject of one particular chapter in Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. Chapter 11 of Think and Grow Rich is simply entitled “The Mystery of Sex Transmutation: The Tenth Step Towards Riches”. If that isn’t an intriguing title for a chapter then I don’t know what is.

Think and Grow Rich is a classic amongst self development books. It introduces powerful concepts that are easy to grasp and apply to yourself and everything around you.

When someone told me about this chapter I had to run out and check my (previously unread) copy of Think and Grow Rich. I received the book as a gift from my wife and, for shame, had simply not looked at it again, despite (or because of…) her pestering me about it.

I was drawn in by the sex chapter, I admit. There was nothing perverse about this, it was just that I was interested in how Hill would manage to wangle size into being an important part of being able to Think and Grow Rich. He managed it, and I into my second re-reading of the book right now.

Listening to music on my iPhone is one of life’s great pleasures. It allows me to just float away into another world, and to ignore the hustle and bustle that is going on around me. Heaven. This is especially important when I’m traveling somewhere. The iPhone is essentially a top quality iPod and it handles my music pretty darn well.

It is the headphones that really determine the quality of the sound I’m getting from the iPhone through to my ears, and these are most definitely the most important of any of the iPhone accessories that I have the pleasure of owning.

I went through a number of online and ‘real’ iPhone accessories shops trying to find the best quality headphones. The ones I eventually were, well, absolutely stunning. The headphones were made by Bose and believe me they are the absolute kings of iPhone accessories.

The Bose headphones I bought were wireless so there was no trying to untangle one’s neck from the mesh of wire during plane or train travels.

The iPhone fantastic. It is fantastic whether you add accessories to it or just use it on its own. All that iPhone accessories do is add value to the phone; and wow what value they add. Impressive.

Nine Inch Nails have been most famous recently for championing the cause of free music downloads, a practice that has become endemic and incredibly popular. Companies, publishers and even the musicians themselves are finally coming to the conclusion that the flow of free music downloads cannot be stopped, and that embracing the model is the only way forward. There are always new ways to make money out of industry changes like this, but it takes true innovators to spot and exploit them.

Nine Inch Nails are not the first popular mainstream band to embrace the concept of free music downloads: both Radiohead and Coldplay in the UK have managed to get on the bandwagon previously.
